Scope Mount Buying Guide: Dovetail, Picatinny, Cantilever, and QD Explained

A Great Scope Deserves a Great Mount
The most common beginner mistake: spending serious money on a high-end optic, then pairing it with a cheap mount. The result? Re-zeroing after every range trip — or worse, a zero that never holds. The mount is as important as the scope itself: it is the only bridge between your optic and your firearm.
Step 1: Know Your Rail Type
Before you buy any mount, identify the rail on your firearm. This is the starting point for the entire decision.
11mm Dovetail
Common on air rifles, .22 LR rimfire rifles, and European sporting rifles. The rail cross-section is trapezoidal with a top width of approximately 11mm. Pro tip: measure with calipers — older European rifles can have slight width variations between brands.
Weaver Rail
The original standardized rail, with cross-slots approximately 3.8mm (0.15 inches) wide. The catch: Weaver slot spacing was never strictly standardized — slots can vary between manufacturers.
Picatinny (MIL-STD-1913) — The Modern Standard
Picatinny (often called “1913 rail” or “P-rail”) is the military-standardized upgrade to Weaver. The key difference: slot spacing is a uniform 5.23mm (0.206 inches), and slot width is 5mm (0.197 inches). This standardization means any Picatinny-compatible accessory works across different firearms and brands.
Weaver vs Picatinny in one sentence: Picatinny accessories fit Weaver rails (slot-by-slot), but Weaver-specific accessories may not fit Picatinny rails reliably due to inconsistent slot spacing.
Step 2: Dovetail-to-Picatinny Conversion
Got an 11mm dovetail air rifle or .22 and want to mount Picatinny-spec optics? You need a Dovetail to Picatinny adapter. Key buying criteria: multi-point locking screws beat single-screw designs — spring-piston air rifles produce violent bidirectional recoil. If your dovetail has a stop-pin hole (common on Weihrauch and Air Arms), get an adapter with a stop pin. Short adapters (3-5 slots) work for red dots; long adapters (20+ slots) are needed for variable-power scopes.
Step 3: Ring Diameter — 1-Inch or 30mm?
Scope tubes come in two primary diameters. 1-inch (25.4mm): the traditional standard. Most entry-level to mid-range hunting and tactical scopes use this. 30mm: standard for mid-to-high-end tactical scopes and long-range precision optics. The larger tube provides greater internal adjustment range (more MOA/MIL travel). Always confirm your scope’s tube diameter before ordering — it is usually in the model name (e.g., “3-9×40 1 inch” or “1-6×24 30mm”). Bonus tip: some mounts include interchangeable inserts for both sizes — practical if you switch scopes frequently.
Step 4: Specialty Mounts for Specific Needs
AR-15 Platform: Get a Cantilever Mount
The AR-15 flat-top receiver rail is short. Standard rings position the scope too far back — forcing you to crane your neck forward for proper eye relief. A cantilever mount (like our 1-inch cantilever forward-reach mount) anchors at the rear of the receiver but extends the rings approximately 1.5 inches forward, placing the optic exactly where your eye naturally falls.
One Scope, Multiple Rifles: Get a QD Mount
Quick-Detach (QD) mounts use a cam-lever mechanism to lock onto the rail — no tools needed for installation or removal. A quality QD mount offers “return to zero” capability: remove the scope, reinstall it, and your zero holds within fractions of an MOA. The critical quality indicator: the cam mechanism must be steel — aluminum cams wear and deform with repeated use, causing lockup force to degrade and zero to shift.
Changing Sight Height: Get a Riser (like the Unity FAST Micro Riser)
A riser does not include rings — it simply elevates your existing mount or optic. Use cases: achieving lower 1/3 co-witness instead of absolute co-witness on an AR-15; raising the optic for night vision use (typically 2.26″ or higher); compensating for stock comb height that makes standard mounts too low.
Step 5: Installation Checklist
- Use a torque wrench: ring cap screws typically 15-18 in-lbs; base screws 30-35 in-lbs. Too loose and the scope slips. Too tight and you crush the tube.
- Use a leveling tool: the reticle must be perfectly vertical — eyeballing it is not reliable.
- Check ring gap: there should be an even gap (approximately 1mm) between the ring cap and ring base on both sides. Uneven gaps mean uneven clamping pressure.
